Just make sure you don’t harm your clothes in the process; check out the labels on your clothes and make a judgment for yourself. Also, make sure your load is a full one so you do not waste energy washing several small loads.

Using less energy daily means large energy and financial savings. Unplug alliances when they are not being used. Turn off lights and other electronics in a room when you leave. This simple tip can save you a lot of money.

Proper weatherization is a great way to make your home much more energy efficient, even if you are on a budget. If you seal ducts and drafts around your windows or doors, then you will reduce the energy you need to run your house. Not only that, you will also have a much lower energy bill!

Use motion detection sensors on lights in the most popular rooms of your house. These motion sensor lights will turn off lights in rooms that are not in use automatically, which in turn, will save you money with your energy bills. Remember to include the lights above the garage, as well.

You may not be used to thinking about energy use and environmental considerations; and truth be told, you are not alone. Yet you can now change this, now that you understand how to go green you can make the necessary changes in your life. Renewable energy is so named because it is derived from such natural raw materials which do not get exhausted; for instance, sunlight, air, rain water, tides and geothermal energy. Renewable energy consumed in 2008 was around 19%.

New renewables such as modern biomass, small hydro etc. delivered around 3% energy. The most leading is the wind energy having a growth rate over 30%. Its worldwide installed capacity has reached 160 GW. Photovoltaic installation based on solar energy has reached 21%. California has taken a leading role in tapping geothermal energy with rated capacity of 750MW. Brazil produces ethanol from sugar cane, which accounts for 18% of automotive fuel for the country.

Renewable energy is most suited for rural and remote areas where conventional processes of generating energy are inaccessible. Over 3 million, people around the world are getting power from solar photovoltaic arrangement. More than 30 million rural households are getting light and cooking fuel from biogas. Over 160 million households are using biomass for cooking food. Micro-hydro systems have been developed for villages and counties through mini-grids.

The advantages available from renewable energy resources are most suitable for our times of climate change and global warming. First, such renewable energy is abundant. The only expenditure is on their technological utilization for getting energy out of it. Secondly, conversion of such renewable raw material into desired form of energy is very eco-friendly. There is little or no generation of greenhouse gases. Thirdly, these resources of renewable energy are most suited for rural or remote areas.

There are some shortcomings too. Locations having developed geothermal systems are found only in Western United States, New Zealand, Iceland, Philippines, and South America. Wind energy needs high-speed airflow. Solar energy cannot be exploited in polar areas for most of the time in a year. Water is unavailable in desert areas.

However, greenhouse and climate change concerns, high price of available fuel oil, more dependence on automation driven by costly energy are driving us towards gainful utilization of renewable energies. The Government is also supporting such endeavors. Many incentives are in place to encourage such entrepreneurship. There are certain regulatory statutes to include renewable energy generation such as in building construction and industrial activities.

One, there was an alarming situation with depletion of natural resources of non-renewable energy. This has also triggered mindset to examine other resources for tapping energy. The future will be less warm and we may not have to fight oil wars.

Off the Grid: Never Paid an Electric Company Bill – Not Ever!

A wind power and a solar power love story.

These are my friends, Mart and Cappy.  They built this lovely log cabin home by hand on top of a mountain in Upstate New York about ten years ago.  They have never been hooked up to the power grid, not ever, and have never paid an electric company power bill.

Was it easy to do?  Well relatively so.  Has it saved them a ton of money?  Well not sure exactly, but might be near the break even point.  Those are some of the types of questions that I asked late this past summer the day I visited and took these photos.

In Cappy & Mart’s case this came about through necessity due to the site location where they decided to build their log home.  They purchased this gorgeous piece of land with a nice hardwood firewood hillside attached and where it is located on a remote hilltop, I call it a mountain; there were no neighbors and only a dirt road access off the nearest secondary road about a mile away.

The price quote that they received from the power company was staggering to bring power poles the mile to their home site, so Cappy being a clever guy, and a local contractor, decided to do it himself.  How hard could it be?  You put up a wind turbine, no lack of wind where they are, hook up, turn on, and forget the bills, right?

Well not exactly.  They had no plan; they had no power survey, no charts and graphs or schematics.  No problem, buy a small turbine and let’s get goin’.  We do not have progress photos as the project developed, but what you see here is the latest iteration of their power plant that does the job.  This homemade system did expand over time but they do have a plan now to streamline it and put up one nice wind turbine that would look much better.

They are indeed off the grid, and the contraption in their yard looks strange to visitors but they have come to love it.  They started with one small 450 watt turbine and later added two more of the same size.  They also added one small bank of photovoltaic solar panels to help keep the batteries charged up on the windless days.  They do have plans on increasing both the solar and wind energy system and perhaps in a year or two we will be able to give you an update.

So how is the life style with your own power plant?  It is as cozy as can be and they want for nothing.  They have plenty of electrical lighting, a refrigerator, television, and all the usual household appliances that anyone would have.  They cook with propane and heat with wood.  They have learned to conserve on days that the wind is low and they catch up with projects on the days that are quite breezy.

They do have a small gasoline powered generator for backup when Mother Nature does not provide enough free energy, but they never have gone without for any length of time.  Though they still have no neighbors yet, another hearty soul has purchased a building lot about a quarter mile away and will be building a home there also.

The photo of the wood fired boiler is how they heat both their home in winter and their domestic hot water year around.  The boiler is located outside and away from the house and the hot water runs through underground pipes to heating coils in the concrete floor of the full sized basement, and another set of coils are inside the domestic hot water heating tank.

Cappy and Mart are both full fledged volunteer firefighters and do a lot for the nearby community that they live in. Their property, though remote, is within the bounds of a town that has a college community and many very wealthy homeowners that surround a nearby lake.  The village people influence the town board and they have passed some ridiculous zoning laws restricting wind power systems, so Cappy’s wind plant expansion plans have been put on hold.

Turns out that he has decided on one turbine that would cost a few thousand dollars to replace the three small ones that do the job now, but the zoning code would require them to get a licensed state engineer to approve it and that cost would be more than the cost of the new turbine.  They are still looking at ways to make everyone happy and to get the new system installed.

All in all they are very happy living up in their little remote paradise, a small vegetable garden shown in the photo supplies nice fresh veggies in season and the largess is canned.  Note the cornfield behind is farm corn for cattle feed.

Offset Carbon Emissions with Residential Wind Power

Residential wind power has many advantages by not only supplying your home with a green renewable energy source but it will also offset carbon emissions. This is how it will work for your home.  Wind power is collected from a set of blades much like the fans seen on many farms to drive the water pumps. This wind is really kinetic energy that is directly converted to electricity that is compatible with your household needs.

Most residential wind power units are also connected to the local utility grid, which has two purposes. First when the wind is strong and your wind turbine is producing more green energy than your home needs, the excess power is transmitted to the local grid for others to use and you receive an energy credit from the utility company. The second is when the wind is below 7 to 10 mph, your wind turbine does not produce any electricity and you can draw energy from the local grid.

The power savings from a small wind turbine has the possibility of lowering your current electrical bill by as much as 90%, depending literally on how the wind blows. Of course this all depends on your consumption of energy.  There are many methods described here on Way to Go Green that will help you make decisions on how to lessen your own home energy consumption.

To determine the benefits to your home add up your previous 2 years energy consumption in kilowatts. The average for an American household is about 9,500 kilowatt-hours a year. Which translated to a constant need of your home would be in the range of 10 to 15 kW of power generation.

When you use a small wind turbine for residential wind power you will also offset carbon emissions by not requiring commercial power that is manufactured with polluting coal or oil.  This is the offset it would create with the reduction of greenhouse gases that would have been necessary to met your energy needs.

For a small residential wind power turbine about 200 tons of carbon would not be emitted and 1.2 tons of other air pollutants over the life time of your wind power system.  The average lifetime is greater than 30 years with most warranties lasting the same, 30 years.  Residential wind power is a renewable energy power source the whole world can benefit from.

Way to Go Green on Alternate Energy Research

One way to go green is with: Alternate Energy Research which has gone in many different directions.  One of these directions is in biofuels.  Many different parts of the world are looking at this from many different angles including palm oil, soybeans, sugarcane and corn to form bioethanol.

It has been noticed that there are different amounts of water needed to produce a gallon of bioethanol depending on the area’s climate and farming techniques. For dry regions that need irrigation to grow plant need to make biofuel, it may take up to 2100 gallons of water to produce just one gallon of bioethanol while in the mid west it is less than 100 gallons of water.

With an annual production of 9 billion gallons a year of biofuel, some experts differ on opinion whether biofuel is feasible for of alternate fuel during a water shortage. In addition the fertilizer that is used on the plants causes chemical runoff that has been shown to cause dead zones in parts of the oceans.  The Gulf of Mexico is the closest dead zone to America and has been growing for over a decade now.

So is biofuel a real alternative? Yes, there are less chemicals being produced when an engine burns biofuel than that of a petroleum based fuel. Yes there are fewer particles that are emitted also.  Biofuel is a renewable alternative power source that uses water, but the water is not destroyed.  Most researchers act is if the water goes away, but it does not, it just changes position on the map.  If a plant absorbs water in time it will also release it.  It is not destroyed.

Lets Get Behind a Good Geothermal Renewable Energy Source

In the Philippines almost 30% of the country’s energy needs are from a geothermal renewable energy source of the earth.  This move was started over 30 years ago when the now deposed leaded Ferdinand Marcos reacted to the energy crunch in the 70”s.  He created a major governmental program to tap into their natural resource to not only reduce the country’s dependency on foreign oil imports but to reduce the price of supplying energy to the people of his country.

With a country of 90 million people where over 40% of the population survives off of less than $2 a day, a solution for cheap reliable green energy was needed.  Today this country is home to the world’s largest consumers of electricity from a geothermal power source.

America is ranked #1 in geothermal power capacity in use and has even more potential for expansion of this green renewable energy source but have yet to exploit it to its full potential. For over 30 years the government of the Philippines has been behind their initiative to ever expand this power source with consistent enthusiasm.  The government of the Untied States has been behind our nation’s commitment for geothermal power but it has been inconsistent.  Each new president has his own agenda so priorities keep changing.

A perfect example of inconsistency is what the Bush administration did. In 2006 the federal spending programs for the development into geothermal power was reduced to $5 million.  This is only 5% of what it was in the 1980”s.  Because of this many projects had to be dismantled which was not only a waste of U.S. tax dollars but the scientists involved had to find other employment.

A consistent green energy policy needs to be not only established but keep immaterial of what administration is in office. Geothermal is a renewable energy source our country needs and has plenty of.  All the government needs to do is quit wasting the tax dollars and stay focused.

Green Renewable Energy of Ocean Currents

There are ocean currents that cover our world from one end to the other then back again in a continuous motion. This kinetic energy is also a green renewable energy source. The best-known ocean current to Americans is the Gulf Stream. If just 1/1000th of the energy of this current was harnessed it could supply the state of Florida with 35% of all of its energy needs. This is a source of efficient energy production without any pollution or waste. This energy source is not only green and renewable but also more reliable than either solar or wind power. The speed of this current is a steady 4 knots at the surface, which can translate to 1 kW per square meter.

There presently exist turbines that are capable of producing electricity on water movement at speed as little as 1 knot. This is slow enough not to harm most fish and other wildlife that might encounter the ocean-based machinery. This is in comparison with the technology that is used in the dam and stream turbines currently in use. This older technology needs a current of five to six knots for efficient operation.

The new technology uses the power of the current to push and pull a cylinder up and down. The energy from this vibration is converted to electricity. Power production from a square meter of ocean current that is occupied by cylinders with a current flow of 3 knots is equivalent to 51 watts of power.

Just think of it if about one percent of the energy in the ocean could be harnessed. This power could provide over 150 billion people with all of their energy needs.

The most widely available and unharnessed green renewable energy source is still untapped. The time is right to utilize this energy source.

SunEdison is North America’s leading solar energy provider. This company manages over 31 megawatts of energy. With power stations in 9 states, this is company is proving Green Energy is a viable option for the future.

Pacific Power is an energy provider for 6 western states. They have a blue-sky program that supplies consumers with energy produced by wind and solar power.

Rocky Mountain Power was a part of Pacific Power until 2006. They offer the same types of green energy as their previous parent company by utilizing wind and solar power to product electricity for its customers.

Silicon Valley Power is a non-profit municipal electric company that is owned and operated by Santa Clara, CA. With this company, the consumer can chose to have 100% of their energy to be supplied from either wind or solar power.

We Need More Waste Heat Recovery

I remember growing up and seeing the cooling ponds from the local power plant give off steam in the winter.  As a young child I thought it looked cool. Today I think what a waste. There are numerous accounts of waste heat just literally being wasted. Some of the processes that produce waste heat are fuel combustion or chemical reactions. Large amounts of heat are generated for different purposes in boilers, kilns, ovens and furnaces. Not all of the energy is recoverable but a good portion is and should be.

There are many well know heat exchangers in use today. One of the best-known but not knows is in most automobiles.  The heat produced by the vehicles engine is cooled by water. Running it through the radiator disperses the heat into the air thus cooling the water, which cools the engine.  Most people are not aware until it leaks, is that this same coolant water is inside the passenger compartment. Yes that heating core inside your car that keeps you warm in the winter months is successful recovery and use of waste heat.

There are also present today waste heat boilers that convert the hot gases from boilers, channel it to a turbine, and produce electricity.  Unfortunately this supply of energy is not always sufficient and auxiliary heaters are needed to drive the turbine.  But with research and investment a more efficient way will be found.

There are many other ways to conserve, reuse and recycle what we use around us. Just because it has been named waste does not mean it is worthless or useless.

Green Renewable Energy, the Wave Machine

For green renewable energy, one does not need to look far before it becomes apparent that it is all around us. The world is two-thirds covered by water. Most of which is in the oceans, which because of the moons pull along with the wind, is in constant motion. This motion or kinetic energy is in the form waves. Harnessing this energy is a real and viable way to supply the energy needs in a non-destructive way to our environment.

The first wave machine to produce electricity for consumers was installed 4 years ago.  The Portuguese energy company, Enersis saw the future and became part of it. Five kilometers off the northern coast of Portugal is the location of this 8 million Euro project. With production of over 2.25MW, these three OPD-developed Pelamis P-750 wave power generation units are helping reduce the Portuguese peoples dependency on non-renewable energy sources. These wave machines reduce the countries level of CO2 emissions by over 6,000 tonnes.

The European Union has called for 22% of the electric power consumption to come from green renewable energy sources by the year 2010. Four years age the level of renewable sources was only at 6%. By tapping the power of the oceans waves along with solar and wind power, this is possible.

This was all possible because of the Scottish company Green Ocean Energy. Their fore thought has helped the world move away from its dependency on oil and coal to power the electrical plant of the world. In February of 2009, GOE announced its intentions to tie wind power to their wave machines that will be fitted to bases offshore by the year 2010. With this and other expansions in green renewable energy sources, our world will be a cleaner place for future generations to enjoy.

Discussing Alternate Energy Research

With the world dependent on the importation of oil to fuel the growth and expansion of almost every countries economy, alternate energy research has become a major interest and concern in developed nations along with new emerging countries like India.  With their energy demand on the increase but their oil and gas resources limited, the need and desire to be free of dependency on foreign oil imports is greatly increasing.

India only has 5.9 billion barrels of oil in its reserves or about 0.5% of the total global reserves. This small amount is not even close to supplying the demand needed in India’s economy. Today 70% of the oil used in India is imported. As their economy grows over the next decade and expansion in their industries, the demand for oil will only go up. It is estimated the demand could possibly be 92% of their oil supply will be imported by the year 2020.

To reduce this dependency on other nations, India’s University of Petroleum and Energy Studies has begun to concentrate their efforts in alternative energy sources through research into a variety of areas. The focus is on Bio-fuels, Solar and Wind Power, Hydrogen and Fuel Cells and any other new technology that could free this emerging nation on its dependency of foreign oil imports.

A few of this institutes projects that have been completed are the “Installation, Commissioning and Demonstration of Integrated Biodiesel Plant in the state of Uttaranchia, India”, “Ethanol Blending Program in India” and the “Development of a Biodiesel Fuelled Car.”

As for ongoing project the “Survey on Inventory and Quality of By-Product Hydrogen Potential in Selected Major Sectors in India” and the “Feasibility of using Straight Vegetable Oils as fuel in IDI Diesel Engines with different blends”.

The world has a finite supply of oil and gas reserves. As one world there needs to be a global solution. It is reassuring to this American that other countries including the new emerging economic powers, have taken the interest and dedicated resources into alternate energy research seriously.

Take a Look at Alternate Energy Investments

In America, alternate energy investment is needed to reduce our demand and consumption on imported oil. The U.S. government knows this and has set up a $160 million contest that will be awarded as federal grants to build 3 new plants for the production of cellulosic ethanol. There are over 30 companies actively researching for an economical way to produce this alternative fuel. For these companies to win the award they must first have a functional pilot plant up and running proving their process works.

This all sounds great but what is cellulosic ethanol? Everybody knows converting the sugars in corn to an alcohol produces what we call ethanol. The government’s goal is for not only the corn but also the plant as a whole to be consumed for the production of ethanol.  This is being done with microorganisms. Genetic engineers are modifying certain organisms to consume not only the corn, but also the stalk and leaves to produce the alcohol.  Enzymes are helping to break down the cellulose to sugars, which feed the microorganisms.

This line of investment has some of the big names involved like Goldman Sachs. They have teamed up with Royal Dutch Shell and Iogen. The pilot plant in Ottawa is showing promising results and if scaled up could produce cellulosic ethanol at $1.35 a gallon.

ADM is also vying for government funding. A considerable investment as the largest ethanol producer in the nation has already been made. With research looking into ways to convert the whole kernel of corn into ethanol, including the fiber, will increase their process output by 15%.

A third company is Europe’s leading producer of ethanol, Abengoa Bioenergy. Here they convert ethanol out of wheat straw.

Right now the U.S. taxpayer is subsidizing the cost of the ethanol production with a 51-cent federal tax credit and other programs costing over $2 billion a year. But with the big investors and companies involved, alternate energy investment is the path to making money. If it were not a wise investment then there would not be so many companies and big investors already making the plunge. It is just a matter of time till our dependency on foreign oil is diminished.

A Way to go Green is with Alternative Energy Sources

The sun is an excellent source of energy when it’s shining.  Although some of the energy gets absorbed into the atmosphere and some gets reflected back into space, there is plenty left over for us to utilize.  Usually the suns energy is collected on big solar panels made of silicon and glass.  The energy collected can be used to generate electricity and hot water.

Wind is a powerful force, so why not use it to generate energy?  Usually collected using windmills, wind energy can be turned into mechanical energy for performing work such as pumping water and milling lumber.  The only downfall is that the wind doesn’t blow all the time.

Geothermal energy comes from the heat that is naturally produced by the earth’s core.  Geothermal energy tends to show itself in the form of volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs.  To use this energy, we’ve usually built generators over the top of hot springs.  The water can reach temperatures of 700 degrees Fahrenheit.  Geothermal energy can be used for hot water and the heat can be converted into electricity.

Biomass:
Finally, the last type of alternative energy sources is biomass energy.  Items like wood, garbage, crops, and manure are forms of biomass energy.  They energy from biomass is used to help heat businesses and homes and can also be converted into electricity.

President Elect Barack Obama Wants A Clean Energy Economy

In this technologically advanced society, it’s amazing that we can’t do more to live a greener, more energy efficient lifestyle. Under President-elect Barak Obama, this may change, and for the better. The newly elected President wants to create a nation where we can enjoy a cleaner, greener way of life. Alternate Energy:
Mr. Obama has created a plan where the American people can save thousands of dollars on their energy costs, through the use of reusable energies. He would like to see better ways of using Wind energy, Solar energy, and even Geothermal heating, in order to reduce the amounts of hazardous emissions that hang in our atmosphere.

Hybrid Cars:
He would also like to see more people using the new hybrid plug-in cars, due to the fact that they can run up to 150 miles on a single gallon of gas. This would help our nation get out from underneath our dependency on foreign oils. He would also like to see more bio-fuels created, as well as newer synthetic petroleum products, which create less carbon dioxide than typical fuels.

Economy and Ecology:
Though he knows it will take a few years, but the Obama-A Clean Energy Economy idea is setting new heights in creating a better economy for the American people. He has figured out how to take our two biggest problems, economy and ecology, and combine them in an effort to alleviate them both. Through his plan, everyone in the country will have access to better jobs, more efficient energy sources, and a much greener society.
