Going Green Products for Personal Care

Thanks for checking out waytogogreen dot org for news on going green.
Products for personal care are used on a frequent if not daily basis.  Here are some great tips on greener personal care.

You wouldn’t think so, but the things you put on your body have an incredible effect on your overall health and even the environment.  From lotions, to sunscreens, to makeup, they all can contain relatively small amounts of different chemicals that absorb into your skin.  Constant use causes these chemicals to build up in our bodies.

If you are into going green to the extreme, you can live by the rule that if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin.  What’s not so extreme is ruling out any products that have ingredients on the label you can’t read.  Ingredients such as natural oils, vitamins, minerals, and herbs are safe.

The worst culprits of personal care products are:

- Antiperspirants with aluminum chlorohydrate (any aluminum can build up in the body and have negative effects on the brain)
- Deodorants with triclosan (triclosan has been shown to cause liver damage)
- Sunscreens/sunblocks with a number of dangerous ingredients (including diethanolamine, benzophenone, homosalate, octyl-methoxycinnamate, and parabens)
- Soaps with various ingredients (such as petroleum-derived synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, and/or artificial colors)
- Shampoos with formaldehyde (sometimes labeled as quaternium-15)
- Toothpastes with sweeteners and fluoride (fluoride even in small amounts is toxic)

Knowing these things may help in your quest of going green.  Products for personal care is definitely something to look into further.

Buy Cosmetics, Organic or Natural

Before the end of 2009, there will be a set of minimum standards for HBC (Health & Beauty Care) companies to live up to before they can claim to be making Cosmetics, Organic or Natural and other products.

Surprisingly, many people have been led to believe that the products they are using have been put to the test so their labels can say natural or organic. The truth is, there have been no standards for HBC products so companies have gotten away with calling their products and cosmetics organic or natural when they really aren’t.

There are companies that have worked hard to live by their own set of standards to produce products that are of high quality. Aubrey Organics and Dr. Bronner’s are good examples of this. Their products contain quality ingredients and they are obtained through fair trade.

Some are worried though, that as bigger companies get involved, they will work to weaken the standards. This would result in companies looking for the loopholes to be able to include un-pure ingredients or fillers in their products and still claim to be natural or organic.

Be on the lookout for seals on the natural and organic cosmetics and products. These seals will tell you whether or not the product meets the Natural Product Associations standards.

Six Tips on Creating Your Own Go Green Wardrobe

Here are six great tips for making your wardrobe a little greener. These are some simple things that won’t cost much and will help to make your life a little better.

1) – Wash your clothes less. Jeans, sweatshirts, and even some shirts don’t necessarily need to be washed every time you wear them. This will save water and the energy it takes to wash and dry your clothing.

2) – If you are going out for a special occasion and don’t have anything to wear, instead of buying something you’ll probably wear once, raid your friends’ closets and see if they have something appropriate.

3) – Check out consignment shops to find “new to you” clothes. It will save you money and is a great green option. We have taken advantage of this option for many years and have located many very nice items.

4) – Donate older clothes to consignment shops or even Goodwill. They can pass on what you aren’t utilizing to someone who will. Or you can set up a clothing swap where all your friends bring their clothes over and everyone trades.

5) – Buy clothes made with organic or sustainable materials. Also look for flea markets or farmers markets where local artists may be selling original hand made clothing. Keep an eye out for classified ads in your local Penny Shopper newspapers or even on Craigslist.

6) – Fix up clothes with missing buttons or small tears. You can do these things yourself or hire a professional. Restore, recycle and reuse clothes instead of discarding them.

How To Go Green with Products for Personal Care

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to be fully conscious of the things you put on your body. On a regular basis we wash our hair and bodies, cover our skin with lotion, put makeup on our faces, brush our teeth, and use all kinds of other beauty products. Most of these products contain harmful additives, petrochemicals, and artificial colors and fragrances. So it’s important to make a switch to Go Green Products for Personal Care !

Check the contents:
Try this easy or not so easy experiment. Try to pronounce all the ingredients that are in your shampoo or your toothpaste. Could you do it? These days, probably not. So start looking for personal care products that contain minimal ingredients and ones you feel comfortable putting on your body. Look for ingredients like natural oils, herbs, vitamins, and minerals.

Safe Makeup:
If you wear makeup on a regular basis, look into buying a good mineral makeup such as Jane Iredale. They use ingredients that are actually good for your skin! Stores With Green Products:
Natural foods stores have a large variety of health and beauty products to choose from. Even some big name grocery stores have a section with products that are greener. Look for aluminum-free deodorants, fluoride-free toothpastes, natural sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, lotions, and even hair dyes! Making the switch to greener personal care products will make a difference in your everyday appearance.
