On Using a Green Tea Supplement

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Have you been using a green tea supplement?  Many people do, this is due its natural content of antioxidants that are so sought after by people pursuing good health. Green tea has up to 20 times more active antioxidants than Vitamin C supplements.

The main cardinal antioxidant ingredient comes from the green tea catechins or GTC. This is made up of epicatechin derivatives of which there are four, epicatechin or EC, epigallocatchin or EGC, epicatechin gallate or ECG and epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. Other chemicals that make up green tea that are helpful to the human body are kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin.

Looking at the properties from a biochemical aspect, green tea can be put into four categories. They are antioxidants, anti-cancer, anti-inflammation and anti-radiation

The effects of strong antioxidants on the human body are very beneficial for good health. One of the benefits of an antioxidant is the scavenging effect of lipid free radicals of polyphenols. This beneficial effect from green tea is noticeable stronger than ginko biloba extracts.

The anti cancer properties is a major area of scientific research. Green tea has actually shown sign of inhibiting cancer cell growth. This is accomplished by the catechin and caffeine components of the green tea that block the cell cycle of the cancer cell, causing them to die.

The anti inflammation characteristics are derived from the reduced levels of maltose in a humans mouth after a subject drinks green tea. This is why the Japanese has used green tea to help improve oral hygiene for swelling of the gums.

This is still speculative but there is some research to support green tea exhibits anti radiation properties. More research is needed to confirm this.

One general fact does remain, people that drink green tea or take green tea supplements on a regular basis are healthier and happier than others that do not.
