There are so many ways to save the environment that just thinking about it anybody can come up with a new idea. Some will come about by accident like what I had happen in my garage.  I was changing the oil in my car.  I always save the old oil to lubricate my motorcycle drive chains when I spilled some on an old piece of plastic.  I wiped it off a presto it looked like new.  I knew this but never thought about it, plastic is a petroleum-based product. Oil is a petroleum-based product. I now use old oil to revitalize most of my plastic.  Dirty oil needs to sit and at times be centrifuged but it work just fine try it.

A simple thing that will not only help the environment but your pocket book is to buy the things you need in bulk whenever possible.  This can be done in part at the grocery store or the department store.  This way there will be less packaging and trips to the store, which will save on fuel. Some times when a person buys in bulk they will need to repackage the items, that is ok remember the packages of ice cream you have already eaten from and cleaned the container, reuse them.

For those of you that are like me and like things for free try using your grass clippings and trimmings from the shrubs in your composted pile.  This is the world’s best fertilizer because it is just what Mother Nature uses.

For those of you that work in an office with a coping machine, grab the discarded paper.  My children love to draw and this is free paper and is possible for them to express themselves without a cost.   For those of you that either do not have children or they have left the nest, think you still use scrap paper.  This is a perfect way to not only fill the need but also save money.

One of the ways to go green is to help save the environment and as an individual, if you just want to and are serious you can. There are a lot of little things to do that will add up, especially if there are a lot of individuals that do the same as you. All you have to do is look around your local area and see what others are doing.  One of the best places is the local schools.  The teachers are attempting to get students involved in projects that will have long lasting impressions on them.  One way they use is their concern for the future and the world they live in.  I do not know of a school that does not have a recycling program as a way to increase funding for special projects. Even if you do not have children in your local school, they do have programs that will help save the environment that you can participate in.  It may be used as a moneymaker for the school and as a teaching aid but they still contribute to saving our world.

The little things do count. I was surprised to learn that the reason for aluminum producers to start the aluminum can recycling programs was because it actually saved them money.  The cost of extracting aluminum from bauxite is expensive in both cost of extracting the raw materials and the energy needed for the process.

Another geeat way to save the environment in a small way is to stop junk mail. Over 100 million trees a year go to waste in America because of junk mail and for what you receive at your home comes to 1 and half trees. To stop your mail box from being filled with this garbage just write to Mail Preference Service, Direct Marketing Association, 11 West 42nd St. PO Box 3861, New York, NY 10163-3861.  They are responsible for almost 75% of all the junk mail you receive.  Ask them to stop.

There are many ways to save the environment. Every body should care but even if one person reduces their waste or conserves energy, it is a positive step forward. Of course the more people that contribute to saving our environment, the better it will be.

To conserve energy at home is the easiest. Turn off lights in rooms that are unoccupied. Keep the filters on your HVAC units clean. Lower the temperature of your water heater to 120F and wrap the unit with a blanket. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. The planting of trees on the west side of your home will shade it during the hottest part of the day. There is more just use common sense.

Removing and reducing the dangerous toxins from your home is one of the easiest ways to save the environment. Each cleaning product must be inspected for toxic substances. The toxic chemicals must then be properly disposed of. The use of mousetraps instead of poisons will also help. Know the age of your house and determine if it might have been painted at one time with lead paint.

At work reuse common items. Just because you don’t pay for items like paperclips, envelopes, copy paper, is not a reason to be wasteful. Remember saving the environment is all of our responsibility.

Conserving water is relatively easy. Stop all leaks as soon as they appear. Wash the dishes then rinse. Do not let the water run continuously. Install a low flow showerhead.

Purchase items in bulk and avoid those products that have multiple layers of packaging. Reuse plastic bags and storage containers.

If possible use energy supplied from renewable sources like hydro, solar and wind power.

There are many ways to save the environment.  We all must do our part.
