More Tips for Going Green with Baby

The most important job you have is to provide for the very best care and nurturing of your baby. This little boy or girl will grow up into a world that is wide and wondrous. It is your duty to make it a clean, healthy and safe place for baby to grow in.

What you do now in providing the best care in the infancy stages of growth will set this little human being on the right path to success and prosperity. Here are a few more points to help you Go Green with Baby.

Green Diaper Options:
You know how quickly we go through diapers. If you think about all the babies in the world and all the diapers they go through… it adds up to a whole lot of diapers. Of course there are the typical disposable diapers, but these just end up sitting in landfills for what seems like forever. So as parents, it is our job to consider the greener diaper options that are available.

You can choose to use the average cloth diaper, which are still sold in the baby section at many stores. Or you can check out the new generation cloth diapers. They have fitted cloth diapers that Velcro or snap around your baby so there are no pins to potentially stick your baby with. There are all kinds of polyester, wool, or fleece covers that fit over cloth diapers for a more stylish look. They come in all kinds of colors and designs.

There are more eco-friendly disposable diapers available. They are made without dyes, fragrances, chlorine, or gels. Even though they still end up being thrown out, they are a step in the right direction. Some companies that make eco-diapers are Tushies, Seventh Generation, and Tender Care.

There also are now diapers that are flushable. A company called gDiapers makes a sort of hybrid diaper. It is a cloth outer diaper with a snap-in liner that holds absorbent pads. When your baby soils the absorbent pad, you simply remove it, break it up in the toilet, and flush.

Greener Toys for Baby:
With so many toys being recalled these days, parents need to be very aware of what their children are playing with. There are green toy options out there, they are just a little harder to find.
Look for well crafted solid wood toys. Be sure that there are no toxic paints, sealants, or finishes that were used. Not only are wooden toys better for the environment because they don’t end up in landfills. They can also be passed on as the child grows or saved for children to come.

Babies and children alike, love to snuggle with their stuffed animals and other cloth toys. Unfortunately, not all toys are made alike. Look for soft and cloth toys made with organic fiber fabrics (cotton, hemp, or wool). These materials are grown without the use of pesticides or other chemicals that could be harmful to your baby.

Beware of plastic toys! Especially avoid soft plastic toys, which contain phthalates. This chemical is considered to be one of the most toxic and environmentally unfriendly. Teethers, squeeze toys, beach balls, bath toys, and dolls may all contain this harmful substance. Babies may be at a higher risk in regard to plastic toys because they like to put everything in their mouth.

PVC is another toxic and the most environmentally damaging of all plastics. When you do buy plastic toys, be sure to look for those that are PVC free. The following companies have removed PVC from their products: Brio, Primetime Playthings, Sassy, Little Tikes, Lego, Early Start, and Tiny Love.
