Is Fracking with Propane a Good Option?

Natural gas fracking using enormous quantities of water scares the hell out of most home owners that live in an area where this process is used to extract gas out of the Marcellus Shale rock.

Now there is a method being used called Propane Fracking that just might be an acceptable procedure for both parties in this argument. The propane is what is used to expand the gas pockets and it ultimately is reclaimed with the natural gas.

We here at Way To Go Green dot org are very concerned about the environment but we are also willing to learn more about technology and new methods to fill our energy needs and to most importantly keep our land and property values in good order.

Primarily we are concerned with things like safe drinking water, air quality, pollution and having a safe place to raise our families. We have been following with interest some of the controversy regarding hydraulic fracturing for gas well drilling.

With new technology the gas well drillers have perfected methods to go down deep into the Marcellus Shale deposits and then actually turn the drill bit horizontally and create a path through a much larger segment of the shale which exposes more gas to the drill hole.

The normal process of this type of fracking then pumps millions of gallons of water and sand mixture under extremely high pressure which fractures the shale into pockets which the sand then remains in and natural gas then seeps in to for extraction.

The largest fears seem to be that this high pressure water system will upset or destroy the drinking water of home owners. The companies that are in the fracking business tell us that the depths at which the horizontal drilling occurs is way below any drinking water sources and the EPA seems to agree with them.

The various state environmental agencies in which this gas drilling process is used say that there are no known claims of damage to domestic water that can be proven. Well that remains to be seen. All you have to do is to search Google and you will find a lot of discussion to the opposite.

Newest Green Engine to Deliver 100 MPG Gas or Diesel Cars – Bill Gates is Major Investor

All new design of a Two Cylinder opposed more efficient engine, designed by former Volkswagen executive.  This is coming soon to the automobile industry and not soon enough for our fuel consuming readers.

Bill Gates and other investors have just added a much needed boost to bring this engine dubbed the OPOCTM (Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder) in to production.  According to a CruchBase article regarding the $23.5 Million invested by Gates and Khosla Ventures it appears as though we will be seeing this predicted 100 MPG engine in production.

The simple process of how this engine works by using four pistons all linked together within two cylinders that automatically balance each other out thereby increasing efficiency and power.

You No Longer Need to Become a Nerd to Learn How Wind Energy Works

Wind is the result of the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun and the fact that temperatures will always be trying to reach an equilibrium (heat is always moving to a cooler area). With the rising price of energy and the damage to the environment from fossil fuels, it is more and more equitable to harvest this renewable resource.

The benefits of wind energy are that it is virtually free (once you purchase the equipment) and there’s no pollution. The disadvantages include the fact that it isn’t a consistent source (the speed varies and many times it is insufficient to make electricity) and it typically requires about one acre of land.

How Wind Energy Works

The volume of power that can be found varies by wind speed. The total amount available is termed it’s power density and it’s measured in watts per square meter. That is why, the U.S. Department of Energy has separated wind energy into classes from 1 to 7. The average wind speed for class 1 is 9.8 mph or less while the average for a class 7 is 21.1 or even more. For effective power production, class 2 winds (11.5 mph average speed) are frequently required.

Usually, wind speeds increase as you get higher above the Earth. For that reason, the typical wind generator is installed on a tower no less than 30 feet above obstructions. There are 2 basic types of towers employed for residential wind power systems (free standing and guyed). Free standing towers are self supporting and are usually heavier which means they take special equipment (cranes) to place them. Guyed towers are supported on a concrete base and anchored by wires for support. They typically are not as heavy and most manufacturer’s produce tilt down models which is often easily raised and lowered for maintenance.

The kinetic (moving energy) from the winds is harnessed by a device known as the turbine. This turbine includes airfoils (blades) that capture the power of the wind and use it to turn the shaft of an alternator (like you have on a car only bigger).

There are 2 basic kinds of blades (drag style and lifting style). We all have seen pictures of old-fashioned windmills with the large flat blades which are a good example of the drag style of airfoil. Lifting style blades are twisted rather than flat and resemble the propellor of a small airplane.

A turbine is classified as to whether it is built to be installed with the rotor in a horizontal or vertical position and whether the wind strikes the blades or the tower first. A vertical turbine typically requires less land for it’s installation and is a better option for the more urban areas worldwide. An upwind turbine is created for the wind to impact the airfoils before it does the tower.

These units normally have a tail on the turbine which is required to maintain the unit pointed into the wind. A downwind turbine does not require a tail as the wind acting on the blades tends to maintain it oriented properly.

These turbine systems would be damaged if they were to be allowed to turn at excessive speeds. Therefore, units should have automatic over-speed governing systems. Some systems use electrical braking systems while some use mechanical type brakes.

The output electricity from the alternator is sent to a controller which conditions it for use in the home. The usage of residential wind power systems requires the home to either remain tied to the utility grid or store electricity in a battery for use when the wind will not blow sufficiently.

When the home is linked with the grid, the excess electricity that is created by the residential wind power system can be sold to the utility company to reduce and sometimes even eliminate your utility bill. During times with not enough wind, the home is supplied power from the utility company.

The Price of Wind Energy

Small residential wind power turbines can be an attractive alternative, or addition, to those people needing more than 100-200 watts of power for their home, business, or remote facility. Unlike PV’s, which stop at basically a similar cost per watt independent of array size, wind generators get less expensive with increasing system size. At the 50 watt size level, for instance, a small residential power wind mill would cost about $8.00/watt when compared with approximately $6.00/watt for a Photo voltaic module.

That is why, everything being equal, PV is more affordable for very small loads. As the system size gets larger, however, this “rule-of-thumb” reverses itself.

At 300 watts the wind mill costs are down to $2.50/watt, while the PV costs are still at $6.00/watt. For a 1,500 watt wind system the cost is down to $2.00/watt and at 10,000 watts the cost of a wind generator (excluding electronics) is down to $1.50/watt.

The Oil Well Disaster, Stop it, Please Stop it…

So sad.  How can we get the best brains in the world to work on this and stop the damn oil from gushing out into the ocean?

Seems to me that as bad as it is now, it will only be worse until it stops.  Then the nightmare of what to do with the oil and how to cope.

China Using Solar Thermal Power

It seems the Chinese are more than just talk. The Chinese Government made a big thing about Earth Hour a few days ago, but before that they were already planning on moving into green renewable power as a source for their growing industrial power needs.

In the year 2010, China plans to bring online a 1.5 megawatt solar thermal power station.  This will be capable of supplying the power needs of over 30,000 homes.  The cost of this plant is to be approximately 100 million yuan.  The power plants will cover an area of approximately 13 hectares.  The funding for this project is from the Ministry of Science, the city of Beijing and the China Academy of Science.

The power output of this new plant is expected to be in the range of 2.7 million kWh of electricity per year.  Since a conventional coal burning plant would produce 2,300 tons of CO2 emissions for the same power generation, this will help reduce the pollution problem plagued by Beijing.

The heart of the plant will be a solar tower that is to be 100 meters tall and contain 100 heliostats of curved mirrors that will follow the sun and direct the rays to a receiver at the base of the tower. There the rays will be transformed to thermal power and the steam generated will directly run the turbine for electrical generation.

Thermal power stations have to be larger than a solar photovoltaic stations but because of the scale the energy is cheaper. In Spain there are both types of solar power plants producing electricity.  The photovoltaic plant is 44-euro cents per kWh while that of solar thermal power station is only 27-euro cents per kWh.

This is a cheap renewable energy power source. The more that is invested in the future the greener our world will be. Look into solar thermal power and invest in a greener tomorrow.
